Moree.
Moree, part of the Moree Plains Shire, is in the north west of New South Wales, close to the Queensland border. Close to the Gwydir River, Moree is situated 640 kilometres from Sydney and 480 kilometres from Brisbane. As at 2001, Moree’s population was approximately 10,250.
The region was originally inhabited by the Kamilaroi people, as such, Moree is Kamilaroi means “The Long Water Hole.” To date, about 17% of the Moree Plains Shire is Aboriginal.
Agriculture is a driving force for Moree, which focuses on cotton, beef cattle, pecan-nuts, olives, wheat, sheep wool and cereal crops. The Moree Plains Shire is also home to the southern hemisphere’s largest pecan-nut farm. Additionally, Moree is known as the Spa Capital of Australia and is famous for its natural wonders – Hot Mineral Baths – found in 1895.
