Community Profile:

The Monaro, located in the south eastern corner of New South Wales is one of the coldest regions in Australia, as it reaches to the foothills of the Snowy Mountains on the southern side. On the eastern side it stretches almost to the coast.

The Monaro is a broad farming area with cattle and sheep enterprises as well as forestry in the Bombala and Delegate areas. Cooma and Jindabyne benefit in the winter from tourism in the Snowy Mountains ski resorts.

As the farming businesses in the area tend to be limited to grazing, this means that the region tends not to have boom times as are experienced in other regions where cropping is possible.

Regarding opportunities for tertiary education and other vocational pursuits, school leavers are challenged by the tyranny of distance.

The nearest centre with a university is Canberra, which is 1 hour from Cooma, but 3 hours from students to the south of Bombala. The TAFE college in Cooma offers a limited range of courses, but many students have to travel to Bega or Canberra to undertake courses.

So the Monaro Education Foundation often addresses the financial stress of living away from home in order to study towards a career.
