Macquarie University has just entered into a new association with the Country Education Foundation of Australia (CEFA) to help rural students.
Under the arrangement, Macquarie will contribute up to $30,000 per year to assist country students wishing to attend the University. These funds will then be used to match grants given to rural students by local CEFA branches. Eligible students enrolling at Macquarie can use these financial scholarships to pay for goods or services directly related to achieving their tertiary education goal such as tuition, accommodation, travel, books or living expenses.
In 2007, Macquarie University announced major reforms of its scholarship program and admissions procedures that will give all students a fairer chance of attending Macquarie.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Schwartz said that at a time when a tertiary education in Australia was becoming more expensive, universities had an ethical responsibility to ensure the best and brightest students could access a first-class university education.
"Australian universities have tended to rely on a single entry mark - such as the Universities Admissions Index - to rank applicants, but these may not always be the best indicator of a person's aptitude to undertake tertiary level studies," he said. "They don't take into account the advantages that some students have had when it comes to easy access to facilities and after-school coaching, for example, or the challenges faced by other students who may have the necessary talent and aptitude for tertiary level study, but who may have experienced difficulties or disadvantage at a crucial time in their schooling, such as the death of a loved one or the divorce of their parents.
"By using a combination of application methods including an application letter, a UAI rank and an aptitude test, we hope to be able to select the students who really deserve to be at university."
To help ensure these students have the financial ability to study, Macquarie University is also revamping its scholarship scheme in 2008, and committing an extra $700,000 to it in the first year, Professor Schwartz added.
High-profile football club Sydney FC is linking up with Macquarie University in a unique relationship for an Australian professional sporting club and a university.
At the heart of the agreement is an arrangement whereby Sydney FC's Hyundai A-League players train at Macquarie University's excellent sporting facilities, including the recently opened $20m Sports and Aquatic Centre.
The club will also run their football camps and holiday clinics at the University, taking full advantage of the seven hectares of sporting fields, comprised of up to five football pitches.
