These scholarships provide $6,000 p.a. for the duration of the student's enrolment in a University of Sydney degree.

The Financial Assistance Office:

The Financial Assistance Office’s role is to provide support to degree students who are experiencing financial difficulty and whose academic work may suffer as a result.  The assistance is provided through a general program of interest free loans and bursaries that students can apply throughout the year, and through an advertised bursary round that closes in April each year.

Assistance is provided for the following:

  • Textbooks
  • Course Related Equipment
  • Clinical Placements
  • Compulsory Excursions
  • Housing Bonds/Rent in Advance/Rent Arrears
  • Medical Bills
  • Electricity, phone and other household bills
  • Computer purchases/repairs/software

The University of Sydney First Year Bursary, valued at $2,000, is a one-off start up bursary, to assist student from low Socio-Economic Status backgrounds (Indigenous Australian students, students with a disability, and rural/isolated areas), to cover cost such as housing bonds, computers and textbooks.

All enrolled students are eligible for assistance from the Financial Assistance Office, including students from rural/isolated areas. 

The Scholarships & Prizes Office

The Scholarships & Prizes Office administers scholarships and prizes for undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees at the University of Sydney. Scholarships for rural students include the following. All of these are by application through the UAC equity scholarships program: http://www.uac.edu.au/equity/

The Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship ($4,415 pa indexed for up to four years) requires that students to demonstrate financial disadvantage, be an undergraduate and be required to relocate from a regional or remote area to undertake higher education. 

The Commonwealth National Accommodation Scholarship ($4,415 pa indexed for up to four years) requires that students to demonstrate financial disadvantage and be required to relocate at least 100km to study a specialist subject. 

The University of Sydney Access Scholarship ($6,000 pa for length of degree) is open to school leavers of academic ability who have been disadvantaged (financial, disability or rural/regional). Scholarships will be allocated according to need. Up to five Access scholarships are reserved for rural students applying through the UAC application process, but recommended by the Country Education Foundation of Australia.

The Shelley Phillips Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit to a female student from a rural or regional area of Australia.

Assistance for student enrolled in specific Faculties

Arthur and Renee George Foundation (ARGF)

The FAO administers loans from this fund and students from the following Degree/Faculties are eligible to apply:

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science
  • Bachelor Laws
  • Bachelor of Applied Science
  • Bachelor of Dentistry

Eligible student can apply for a loan of up to $2,000 in each of their final two years and these loans are repayable following completion of the student’s degree.  For example if a third year Dentistry student received a loan in 2008, they would start repayments in April 2010.  If they applied for a loan in 2009, payments would commence in April 2010.

SH MacCulloch Trust Loan Fund
This loan fund operates in the same way as the ARGF loan fund, however only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

Faculty of Economics and Business Rural/Regional Leadership Scholarships
Up to two scholarships are awarded each year for students from rural/regional areas of New South Wales. Students must demonstrate academic and other achievement, be citizens or permanent residents and enrol in a Faculty of Economics and Business undergraduate degree.

The V. John Plummer Scholarship in Economics and Business is open to school leavers of academic ability who have been disadvantaged (financial, disability or rural/regional)
