The University of Canberra launches a scholarship program with the Country Education Foundation of Australia.
On 31 October 2006, Mr Nick Burton Taylor AM, Chairman of the Country Education Foundation of Australia, signed an agreement between the Foundation and the University of Canberra which formalised the establishment of the new UC-CEFA Scholarship Program. The signing took place at the launch of the UC-CEFA Scholarship Program at the University.
The University of Canberra is aware of the additional hurdles faced by many regional school leavers wanting to access higher education and is delighted that this relationship with CEFA will provide financial support to identified regional students, particularly those in the National Capital Region.
The University of Canberra has had informal arrangements in place to use funds from their Access Scholarship Scheme to provide additional support for students identified by CEFA, however this launch will formalise and build on the relationship.
The University will be allocating up to $20,000 per year for an initial period of three years and will provide bursaries for commencing students enrolled at the University who are identified and assisted by CEFA. Priority will be given to students from the National Capital Region and commencing students can apply for bursaries of between $1,000 to $2,000 to be allocated by the Scholarships Committee according to need.
Mr Nick Burton Taylor said the University of Canberra CEFA scholarship program will greatly assist rural school leavers who choose to further their personal development at the University of Canberra.
“It is wonderful to see the University of Canberra recognising what the Country Education Foundation of Australia is achieving for rural youth and coming on board in such a tangible way. In time, we hope to establish similar recognition and support from all Australian Universities and tertiary institutions,” Mr Burton Taylor said.
University of Canberra Director of Development and International, Ms Jandy Godfrey said the University of Canberra was pleased to be contributing to the National Capital Region’s capacity building.
“We are committed to assisting the community in our region by training young regional people that will contribute to skills retention in the local region,” Ms Godfrey said.
