Air Traffic Controllers manage the safe and orderly flow of aircraft into, out of and between airports throughout Australia and with overseas regions adjoining Australian airspace. Air Traffic Controllers also provide information and assistance to pilots in the event they should experience an in-flight emergency. There are three types of Air Traffic Controllers:
Enroute: Enroute Controllers are responsible for the safe management of air traffic over the majority of the Australian mainland and on oceanic routes.
Terminal Area: Terminal Area Controllers use radar to manage the orderly flow of aircraft arriving and departing from major city airports.
Tower: Tower Controllers work in the control tower at an aerodrome where they are responsible for all aircraft and vehicle movements on the taxi ways, runways and in the immediate vicinity of the aerodrome.
Is this the career for me?
The nature of the job demands that Air Traffic Controllers be able to make quick and accurate decisions based on information regarding an aircraft's position. Self-motivation, confidence and dedication are key attributes of successful Air Traffic Controllers, along with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Applicants should have a high level of English and be prepared to work shifts on any day of the year.
What locations could I work in?
Enroute control services are delivered from our two major centres in Brisbane and Melbourne. Terminal Area Controllers may be based in these centres or could also expect to work in Cairns, Sydney, Adelaide or Perth. Tower Controllers may be based in any of our 26 control towers around Australia.
