Ardlethan.
Ardlethan – Gaelic for ‘hilly’ and also the home of the Kelpie Dog Breed.
Ardlethan sits within the Coolamon shire, one of the richest agricultural and pastoral districts in the Riverina and had traditionally had a strong agricultural and pastoral focus with particular strengths in grazing and grain cropping.
It was the discovery of gold and then tin that resulted in the formation of Ardlethan. As mining declined the town became a service centre for the surrounding wheat and fat lamb properties. The inevitable grain silos are still the most prominent landmark in the town.
With a population of approximately 450, Ardlethan is surrounded by the communities of Beckom, Marrar and Matong who’s populations range from 80 to 250 persons.
The area's built heritage reflects its flourishing economic development from the time of early European settlement until the 1920s. The main streets and surrounds of the Shire's towns are distinctive and little changed since that time.
The Ardlethan area is also home to producers of niche produce such as alpaca wool, olives, wines, cheese, free range eggs and organic produce.
